Year 11 learners enjoyed an amazing masterclass from NHS radiologists Radiya Islam and Mariyah Islam, who visited LDE UTC to explain the importance of their job in the medical world and to teach the science of radiology. Radiology is a medical speciality that employs the use of imaging both to diagnose and to treat diseases visualised within the human body.
The masterclass taught the difference between diagnostic and therapeutic radiology as well as presenting the learners with different types of scans (such as CT scan, X-ray and MRI) and explaining how they work and what purposes they serve.
Learners were treated to engaging discussions and questioning throughout the masterclass with visual diagrams and interactive activities ‘spotting the fracture’ for different scan images.
They were invited by Science Teacher, Rayeeda Sabur, who remarked, "This term, year 11 learners were studying the use of the electromagnetic spectrum of waves. They really enjoyed participating in the radiologist Masterclass as they were informed of their job role and understood how science underpins their role as radiologist."
Our visitors explained the different pathways to become a radiologist and offered invaluable career advice to our learners. As well as exposing learners to a future career pathway, key areas on the learners’ revision booklet were covered, which helped them to prepare for upcoming formative assessments.
