Learners visit London Stadium

Our science learners enjoyed a trip to West Ham United’s Iconic London Stadium, for a tour of the ground followed by a talk exploring two important careers that affect the local area. Facilitated by London Stadium learning, our young scientists enjoyed talks from Oliver- a Commercial Manager at MACE- and Tamzin, a Principal Ecologist for Temple.

Commerical Manager are responsible for the budget and keep on top of all the costs involved in large-scale construction projects.
Ecologists study the relationships of organisms and their environment. In addition to their research, they gather data and analyze it for importance

The tour of the London Stadium took the classes all around the ground, as they enjoyed insight into the elaborate construction project to convert the former Olympic Stadium into a football stadium. As well as learning about the elaborate construction project, they were given behind the scenes access to the changing rooms, luxury suites and boxes and much more.

Following the tour, learners went into the London Stadium learning centre to meet with Oliver and Tazmin. Oliver discussed his career pathway, the day-to-day roles of a Commercial Manager as well as Mace’s work to regenerate Stratford in anticipation for the Olympic games.

Tazmin also shared the vocational background that led her into becoming an ecologist and discussed her role in construction projects. Tazmin also discussed equipment and methods that ecologist use, such as quadrats, to determine the biodiversity of an area. This topic was particularly important for our science learners as they will be using quadrats during their GCSE course.

On this trip, learners gained insight into two very different job roles that play vital roles in construction projects and the regeneration of an area. Following these talks, learners also had the opportunity to ask questions to the guest speakers about their chosen careers.

Emma shared, ‘I really enjoyed hearing Tamzin talk about biodiversity ad it was really inspiring to hear about her career pathway.’
Fiona added, ‘It was amazing to hear about the innovative ways that Ecologists try to improve the environment for different species and how they have to ensure construction projects consider the natural environment.
