Our year 10 Geography were invited to the new city Hall as part of the Geography GCSE course on cities and sustainability.
Our learners were invited to the new City Hall to understand the role of the Mayor of London, the London Assembly, local, national governments, and regional mayors. It was an exciting eye opening experiencing.
The event began with a welcome from Richard, the Education and Visits coordinator. He explained who the Greater London Authority (GLA) are, and the areas they have authority over. We were then told there was an actual London Assembly meeting taking place and guided down the hallway to the meeting. With over 20 GLA members, including the London Mayor Sadiq Khan himself, we were privileged to gain such insight.
During the meeting, we heard their analysis of the success of the Elizabeth line, including the fact that the week commencing November 28th, the Elizabeth Line was the busiest railway line in Europe, used by over 3.4m users in a week. Learners witnessed how these meetings take place, as well as the different roles and the decision-making processes involved in running a major city.
This trip was invaluable as it also forms an important part of their Geography GCSE, in particular understanding the importance of transport in a sustainable city.
‘I learned a lot about the history of London, how far we have come, and how much it takes to run a complex and huge city. We take for granted how things run so smoothly. It makes me proud to be a Londoner’ Diya- year 10 Geography learner.
‘I hope that learners felt involved, know what it takes to be an be active participant in their city, and make important decisions about the future of London. I know that one student has been inspired to be involved in some activities, so watch this space!’ Sabrin, Lead Humanities.
