Learners were invited to Manor Road Quarter to discuss the safety precautions Morgan Sindall must take during their construction project.
Morgan Sindall delivers construction and regeneration across the UK for the public, commercial and regulated sectors. With over 6,000 employees across the country, they operate through five divisions: construction and infrastructure, fit out, property services, partnership housing and urban regeneration.
The project on Manor Road is a residential scheme comprised of three blocks, each with different construction methods. During the site visit, Michael speaker discussed the project in detail- an extensive process which is predicted to take 6-8 years to complete.
He also spoke about the unit where workers are located. The unit has a 500 capacity with induction room, welfare facilities, canteen and briefing cabins.?Michael discussed the health and safety precautions that Morgan Sindall must take at their construction sites with specific references to Manor Road.
Learners then enjoyed an interactive Q&A before splitting into small groups for a health and safety activity. On site, Michael set up an area with different risks and safety hazards. Learners had to identify and consider resolutions for these hazards.
Following this insightful visit, learners were tasked to work in groups and prepare a presentation evaluating the safety of the Manor Road site. Morgan Sindall employees Michael, Monica and Terry then visited our college to judge our learners’ presentations. Learners covered the following: what inspectors look for when assessing a sites safety, good work practises, safety legislations such as HASWA and a conclusion of their safety report.
Terry, Project Manager and Monica, Social Value Manager shared that 'all learners delivered fantastic presentations, detailing hazards and associated potential risks. We were really impressed by the high level of detail and effort put in by all learners.'
'As a Teacher, It is indeed satisfying to witness how the learners apply knowledge they have learnt from the curriculum in the classroom environment and apply it skilfully to a real-life construction site. This would not be possible without the continuous support from the amazing employers at Morgan Sindall!' Andrew, Built Environment teacher.
