J Browne Group, a utility services business with over 50 years of experience, recently collaborated with our GCSE maths learners to demonstrate the real-world applications of trigonometry in an engaging masterclass.
Sophia, Browne’s Social Value manager and Learning and Development Advisor with extensive industry experience, played a pivotal role in collaborating with our math department to ensure the session both aligned with the curriculum and was relevant in industry.
During the session, learners explored J Browne Group's operations, including wastewater maintenance, developer services, clean water networks, and infrastructure projects.
They then engaged in worded problems that required them to apply cosine, sine, or tangent functions based on given information, highlighting trigonometry's critical importance in utility services. Learners also tackled bridge design problems, visualizing and sketching bridges while incorporating measurements to find solutions. This collaborative session provided real-world context and encouraged learners to discuss their approaches to these problems.
Halima, our math teacher, stated, "This session offered our students learners insights into applying math concepts practically, which will aid them in their upcoming Maths GCSE and help them to see the relevance of trigonometry in industry."
Thanks to Browne for bringing math curriculum topics to life and highlighting how mathematics is integral in the utilities field. These sessions bridge the gap between the classroom and the professional world, motivating our learners’ approach to trigonometry and problem-solving questions.
