Exploring Building Regulations and Safety

Our apprentices recently had the privilege of a virtual visit from Dominic, a Specialist Real Estate Manager at the Metropolitan Police. This masterclass delved into Unit 5 Health and Safety, specifically focusing on the Impact of disasters on changes in legislation, building control, and comprehending the powers of Local Authorities in the building planning stage.

Dominic shared his remarkable vocational background, boasting fifteen years of experience as a Building Control officer with expertise spanning domestic, commercial, entertainment, and high-security construction projects. The session commenced with an insightful exploration of the history of building regulations, tracing their roots back to the Great Fire of London.

During the session, Dominic discussed pivotal legislative milestones, such as the Rebuilding of London Act 1666, leading up to the Building Act 1984, which currently governs building regulations. Dominic offered a keen understanding of what building control officers look for during inspections, touching on town planning intricacies.

"Dominic, with his extensive experience in building surveying, planning, and building management, provided a rare insight into the work of a building control officer. He illuminated red flags on site visits, client expectations, and ventured into the historical context of building regulation linked to fires and disasters—a history we continue to learn from," Pavla, Apprenticeship teacher.

Dominic's expertise offered a valuable glimpse into the intricate world of building regulations and safety, enriching our apprentices’ understanding and preparing them for the challenges and responsibilities within the industry.
