Our year 12 Biology learners recently had the opportunity to enjoy a masterclass from Jasmine, a cell biology research scientist at Unilever, specialising in Human Biology Research & Development.
Unilever, a global consumer goods company committed to sustainable living, has over a century of history and innovation. Jasmine operates from the Unilever Innovation Hub at King’s College London, a space that connects academic and industrial research.
Currently studying the external and internal structures of the mammalian heart, the cardiac cycle, and the utilisation of electrocardiograms (ECGs), our learners found resonance in Jasmine's insights. Through real-world applications, she explained the significance of these curriculum topics in the medical domain.
Jasmine also shared details about her educational and career trajectory. She pursued her undergraduate studies in Cellular and Molecular Medicine (with a Year in Industry) at Bristol University. Following that, she gained professional experience as an Innovation Scientist (Oral Health) before assuming her current role.
Jasmine detailed her academic and professional journey, emphasising the role of work experience during her year placement. She highlighted and discussed diverse pathways into the medical field, including apprenticeships, graduate schemes, and various placements. Genoveva, biology learner shared, “Jasmine explained the job opportunities based on the Cell Biology researcher course as well as the career opportunities and different routes you can take to get into this industry.”
We extend our thanks to Jasmine for offering a glimpse into potential careers stemming from Cell Biology and for sharing her educational and vocational experiences.
