In a masterclass led by Bartlomiej from Knight Architects, renowned specialists in bridge design and civil infrastructure, the intricate world of bridges was brought to life. Delving into the purpose of bridges, the crucial relationship between architects and engineers, the impact of climate change, and the fusion of technology and design, this session offered invaluable insights into creating sustainable and visually striking structures.

The masterclass emphasised the fundamental purpose of bridges, which extends beyond functionality. Bridges serve as connectors, enabling the seamless movement of people, goods, and ideas. Their historical significance, rooted in the traditions of master builders, highlights the importance of harmonising architectural vision with engineering prowess.
Addressing the pressing issue of climate change, our visitor discussed ways to make the construction industry more sustainable. Aligning with the 17 United Nations sustainability goals, he emphasised the need for eco-conscious practices, materials, and design principles to minimise the ecological footprint of bridge construction and ensure long-term environmental resilience.
The masterclass delved into the diverse range of bridge structures, showcasing various designs and construction methods. The integration of advanced technologies, such as 3D modelling, was highlighted as a powerful tool for visualising and refining bridge concepts, enabling more efficient and precise development processes.
Central to Knight Architects' approach is the incorporation of their company mantras into bridge design. The first mantra, "View from/view of," emphasizes the importance of considering the perspectives of both users and surrounding communities. The second mantra, "why who / what how," guides the design process by prompting critical questions: Why is a bridge needed? Who will benefit from it? What kind of structure should it be? How will it be built? With questions such as these, the client is able to redirect their focus to the core problems they are trying to resolve, and Knight Architects can craft purpose-driven solutions.
The masterclass also explored the fundamental concepts of forces and load in relation to bridges. Through diagrams and practical examples, our learners gained insights into the complexities of managing moment and rotational forces, illustrating the engineering principles that underpin the stability and durability of bridge structures.
