UTCs Celebrate Media Excellence at British Film Institute

Our college had the honour of being invited for the first time to the prestigious UTC Creative Media Showcase held at the Southbank British Film Institute. This remarkable event provided our talented year 12 and 13 learners with a platform to showcase their exceptional creative work on the Digital Media course.

The day kicked off with an inspiring introductory talk delivered by representatives from Sky Academy, the BFI Academy program, and Resource Productions, the sponsors for the day’s event. They shed light on the many career, creative, and apprenticeship opportunities available within the performing arts and media industry.

Following the introductory session, our learners entered the prestigious theatre hall, joining their counterparts from other UTCs for a rehearsal. Learners were blown away by the scale of organisation involved in such an event, as they rehearsed alongside the sound and projector technicians.

The showcase was a great success, with captivating showreels from UTCs across the country. The audience was enthralled by the impressive work displayed, and our learners took centre stage with confidence and passion. They spoke passionately about the projects they had completed as part of the Digital Media course, showcasing their skills honed through employer-led projects and extracurricular activities.

The event concluded with a closing speech delivered by Simon, the CEO of Baker Dearing Trust. He expressed his pride in the exceptional standard and diverse range of showreels presented throughout the day. Our learners, despite not being a specialised media UTC, shone brilliantly among their talented counterparts, affirming their dedication and creativity.

'We are delighted to be one of the first UTCs to showcase Digital Production at the British Film Institution (BFI) Multi UTC event. As a school leader it is important to celebrate success and equally as a teacher a proud moment to see our learners come together to showcase their talents on the Big Screen! The OCR Digital Media Diploma qualification is so varied and provides great opportunities for learners to explore many virtual production methods including 2D, and 3D creative techniques. Our year 12 and year 13 learners have produced a huge amount of work as a result of the many Employer Projects they have worked on and it was mind blowing for me to sit in the audience and watch them introduce a 10 minute reel of stunning 2D digital artwork, 3D modelling and animation... a truly fantastic end to the school year and a wonderful opportunity for the learners. Thank you to the BFI and the BDT for making it happen!' James Culley, Assistant Principal and Digital Media Teacher.
