Year 13 Chemistry learners recently enjoyed a unique educational opportunity—a lecture and facility tour at Queen Mary University, led by Dr. Giorgio, Senior Lecturer in Chemistry and Outreach and Public Engagement Coordinator. The visit focused on revealing the intricacies of analytical chemistry, with a special emphasis on spectroscopy.
Dr. Chianello's session highlighted the vital role of spectroscopy in modern chemistry, demonstrating its applications across various industries like environmental monitoring, food analysis, and biochemistry. Our learners engaged in practical activities, analysing spectrums from different compounds using IR, C-14 NMR, and H NMR spectroscopy. This hands-on activity allowed learners to connect the functional groups and structural details of organic compounds to their theoretical knowledge.
Thanks to this visit, learners not only deepened their understanding of spectroscopy but also saw its real-world relevance. This experience sparked a surge of interest and enthusiasm, with some learners now considering a future in chemistry, inspired by the hands-on insights into the field. Dr. Chianello's expertise offered our learners a rare glimpse into the practical world of analytical chemistry, reinforcing the significance of their studies.
