Our Year One Apprentices were invited on an insightful visit to a LOVELL construction site, diving deep into the construction industry's roles, responsibilities, and the complexities of project execution. This visit was an integral part of their apprenticeship, providing a practical perspective on the skills, knowledge, and behaviours esteemed within the sector, alongside a glimpse into LOVELL's company culture.
At the site office, apprentices observed a range of professionals—from designers and engineers to quantity surveyors and community liaisons—showcasing the collaborative effort essential for successful construction. This firsthand experience highlighted the importance of effective communication, respect, and problem-solving in creatinng a thriving work environment. "It was great to hear the professional journey each of the participants shared, and realise the pathway is not always easy or straightforward," noted an apprentice, appreciating the diverse career trajectories within the industry.
The Gallion's 3b project presented apprentices with real-world challenges, such as navigating site constraints and adhering to regulations imposed due to the site's proximity to London City Airport and the Port of London Authority Radar Mast. These constraints underscore the uniqueness and intrigue of each construction project.
A comprehensive site walkover followed, where apprentices learned about safety protocols, the significance of personal protective equipment (PPE), and observed the practical aspects of construction, like cladding assembly and scaffolding safety.
"The highlight of the trip was a lift in single-cage construction hoist... The views of the river and horizon were truly spectacular," shared Pavla teacher of Built Environment.
Harriet, the LOVELL Liaison Officer, praised the apprentices' engagement: "They were a really interactive and focused group of students who we were happy to have visit our site!"
We are grateful to LOVELL for their collaboration, which has undoubtedly enhanced our apprentices’ understanding and enthusiasm for their future careers in construction.
