In an enriching collaboration bridging secondary school curriculum and higher education insights, our Year 10 learners were privileged to participate in a masterclass on Charles Dickens’ "A Christmas Carol," led by John, Professor of Modern English Literature at University College London (UCL). Renowned for its comprehensive programs and as a leading global university, UCL became the perfect backdrop for this literary exploration. Our visitor was perfectly suited to deliver this masterclass having recently published a book titled The Artful Dickens (Bloomsbury, 2020) that focuses on Charles Dickens's innovations in the art of fiction and his rebellion against the conventions of 'polite prose.'
This masterclass was particularly significant for our learners, aligning seamlessly with their GCSE English Literature studies. It offered them a unique opportunity to dissect this classic text under the guidance of a university professor, deepening their understanding of Dickens's craft and narrative intent.
Professor John's session highlighted Dickens's use of colloquial language, repetition, and clichés, and how these elements combine to defy expectations of storywriting and craft compelling texts. The vibrant discussions and close reading of passages enriched learners' comprehension of the text’s context and themes.
Our learners demonstrated exceptional engagement throughout the masterclass, asking insightful questions and showing genuine enthusiasm for the subject matter. They showed great ability to engage at such a high level of academic discourse.
Kate, teacher of English and curriculum lead, reflected on the session's impact: "Seeing our learners engage so deeply with Professor John's insights was a reminder of the power of literature to spark curiosity and intellectual growth. This masterclass not only enriched their understanding of 'A Christmas Carol' but also equipped them with analytical tools that will serve them well in their GCSEs."
Reflecting on the masterclass, John shared “It was a pleasure. I enjoyed meeting the pupils and I’d love to visit again!”
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Professor John for sharing his expertise and to our learners for embracing this unique learning experience. This masterclass has undoubtedly set a high standard for academic exploration and literary appreciation among our learners.
