Our year 10 Maths learners recently participated in a managing money masterclass hosted by Monica, an Analyst at Barclays. This session aimed to bolster learners' understanding of financial management, focusing on the practical application of compound interest calculations using Excel—a crucial skill for both personal and professional financial planning.
Barclays, a leading global financial services provider, is committed to enhancing financial literacy among young people with educational initiatives dedicated to empowering the next generation with essential financial competencies.
Monica guided learners through the concepts of cumulative and compound interest. The session was structured around interactive group exercises, enabling learners to engage deeply with the material. Monica introduced real-life scenarios that learners might soon encounter, such as saving for a car or managing finances from a first job, which made the session particularly relevant and engaging.
Learners were challenged to calculate compound interest for both one-off and regular savings contributions using Excel. This hands-on experience not only reinforced their mathematical skills but also demonstrated the power of financial tools in making informed decisions.
Reflecting on the masterclass, year 10 maths learner Rayan shared “The class today has given me a window into the world of finances, connecting my prior inexperience to the subject with a familiarity that I can grasp. This session was truly valuable!”
Monica's masterclass concluded with a bonus challenge where learners created adaptable Excel scenarios. These scenarios allowed learners to manipulate input values and instantly see how changes affected the accumulation of interest, further enhancing their understanding and analytical skills.
Halima, teacher of maths, praised the session, saying, "Monica's masterclass provided our learners with invaluable insights into managing finances effectively. It's important for them to see how the financial decisions they make today can impact their future."
Thanks to Monica and Barclays for delivering this engaging and educational session.
