LDE UTC were excited to welcome our new apprentices to the college for our Apprenticeship Induction Day. Throughout the day, key members of the apprenticeship team- including Sharna, Gill, Buddhika and William- led our apprentices through informative talks.
The session began with the opportunity for apprentices to introduce themselves and share their vocational history and current job roles as well as their film and series recommendations. Our apprentices have come from a range of exciting vocational backgrounds such as Graham construction, Thames Water and Southwark Council. They also have some great cinematic tastes!
After some discussion about vocations and Netflix recommendations, Head of Apprenticeships Sharna kicked off the series of talks. Sharna covered a range of important information including the course overview, the standard and culture of the college and the value of the end point assessments. The end point assessment is carried out at the end of an apprenticeship course to ensure apprentices have the knowledge, skills and behaviour (KSBs) needed to carry out their duties with competence. Together with the apprentices, Sharna discussed how they can demonstrate KSBs both at the workplace and at the college.
Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours Knowledge - the information needed to understand and successfully carry out the duties. Skills - the practical application of knowledge needed to successfully undertake the duties. Behaviours - mindsets, attitudes or approaches needed for competence. |
Buddhika- lecturer in Civil Engineering, Construction and Built Environment- followed on from Sharna with a talk about the specific units and assignments that apprentices will undertake. Having worked for LDE UTC’s apprenticeship department since 2017 and completed a masters in the field of engineering, the apprentices were pleased to know that they were in safe hands due to Buddhika’s extensive knowledge of the course. Apprentices could also relate to Buddhika's work and study balance, as she is currently undertaking a PHD whilst working as a lecturer here at LDE UTC. Apprentices seized the opportunity to ask BUddhika any questions about the course and her experiences in her fields of study.
'Once I finish my apprenticeship course at LDE UTC, I want to have achieved all my qualifications (hopefully get a wage increase) and be happy in the role I choose to do.' - Aaron works at Cadent Gas as a Design Apprentice. |
Our apprentices got off to a perfect start at the college by meeting with valuable members of LDE UTC who will no doubt guide these new apprentices through their blended educational journey! Throughout the day, apprentices enjoyed talks from Assistant Principals Kenan and Gloria, as well as SENCO lead Ana and Apprenticeship Business lead Gill.
After such a great Induction Day, we are confident our new apprentices will be great assets to LDE UTC.
‘It has been a busy but very productive week, getting our new year 1 apprentices enrolled, settled, and organised for their first term. We are delighted to welcome them on board and hope that their time with us will be an enjoyable and memorable experience,’ Sharna, Head of Apprenticeships.
