Amazon Future Engineer Virtual Fulfilment Tour

Amazon sells more than 353 million products across their platform and ships approximately 1.6 million packages a day.

Our year 9 Computer Science learners were taken on a virtual tour of the Amazon fulfilment centre ‘Man1’ in Manchester, for an insight into some of intricate operations that help this global company deliver such an extraordinary number of packages.

The tour followed a live process of a customer’s order as it travelled through the fulfilment centre. Tour guides Hannah and Christian demonstrated the use and implementation of algorithms, robotics and computer science in the fulfilment and delivery process. Learners saw the robots moving seamlessly through the warehouse while our guides explained how algorithms power the process. They were also introduced to some of the job roles where workers get to interact with these robots.

an algorithm is a set of instructions or rules that a computer follows to complete a task

Thanks to our attentive and informative tour guides, many of our learners who will go onto become the engineers of the next generation have been inspired by this masterclass.
