Bringing Macbeth to Life: Year 10 Learners Experience Shakespeare through Performance

Our Year 10 learners recently had the pleasure of welcoming Amy and Lewis from Box Theatre House for an engaging masterclass on Shakespeare's Macbeth. This interactive session aimed to support learners with the Literature Paper 1, Section A of their GCSE exam by offering a unique approach to understanding the play through drama.

Box Theatre House, known for its interactive theatre workshops, brings educational topics to life with a hands-on and visual approach. Amy and Lewis's roles in this dynamic company involve transforming curriculum subjects into captivating, live experiences through delivering drama workshops.

The workshop set the stage for a journey into Shakespeare's world, not just as a text, but as a living performance. Learners delved into modern translations of various scenes, enhancing their understanding of the story and its timeless themes.

Learners aslo had the opportunity to work in teams and explore character motivations from an actor’s perspective. This approach allowed learners to step into the shoes of Macbeth’s characters, gaining a deeper appreciation for their complexities. Working in groups, the learners then had the chance to reenact scenes, immersing themselves in the roles and bringing the text to life through drama.

The impact of this workshop extended beyond the conventional classroom learning experience. By interacting with Macbeth as a performance piece, learners uncovered new layers of interpretation and understanding. Amy and Lewis’s guidance enabled our learners to engage with Shakespeare's work in the way it was originally intended – as a dynamic, theatrical experience.

Santiago, a Year 10 learner, perfectly summed up the experience: “The workshop was very informative and gave us an insight into the whole play because we were able to act it out.”

Thanks to Amy and Lewis for this unique learning opportunity and immersive acting experience!
