Our Year 9 learners began an exciting Employer Led Project in partnership with Costain, aiming to address the question, "How can we improve transportation links between East London and South London?" This project spans over 30 hours of learning, integrating numeracy, literacy, oracy, teamwork, and leadership skills. To kickstart this ELP, our learners recently had the incredible opportunity to visit the Victoria Road site for the HS2 project.
Costain Group plc, a distinguished British construction and engineering company, is dedicated to shaping, creating, and delivering pioneering solutions that enhance the performance of the UK's infrastructure ecosystem. Their expertise extends across energy, water, transportation, and defence sectors. They are also a sponsor and supporter of the college. This project will provide our learners with in-depth knowledge of our employer sponsor.
The session commenced with an introduction by Caroline, Talent and Development Manager at Costain, who also serves on the board of directors at the UTC. Caroline elaborated on the project's goals and shared her own career journey within Costain.
Next, Civil Engineer Emily took the floor, shedding light on the roles of engineers and civil engineers, followed by an engaging Q&A and discussion with our learners. Emily delved into the intricacies of the HS2 project, highlighting the collaborative efforts of multiple construction companies in delivering the final 26.4km of HS2's journey to its southern terminus in Euston. The project involves the construction of various structures demanding expert precision and care. Given that 95% of the route will be underground, Emily revealed that SCS (Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture) will operate seven tunnel boring machines, a remarkable feat with five machines operating simultaneously.
Our learners gained valuable understanding of the project from the perspective of a civil engineer, setting the stage for them to contemplate the challenges of the ELP.
To wrap up the insightful day, our learners had the privilege of ascending to a rooftop on site, giving them a stunning view of the site as well as the city of London. To inform this view, Costain employees further discussed the project with the learners and answered their questions.
Reflecting on this experience, Year 9 learner Raigardas shared, "I found it most interesting to learn about what the HS2 line is and how transport between South and North London is being improved."
Lilly-Anne added, "It was exciting to learn how a tunnel digger works and is used in a construction project."
Thanks to our valued sponsor Costain for their collaboration on this inspiring project. We eagerly anticipate the remarkable ideas and innovations our learners will bring to the table at the conclusion of this project!
‘The year 9 learners returned from the trip inspired by Costain and their HS2 work, they were intrigued and have grasped the foundation of our project and its purpose. They recognised the disadvantages of transportation links in East and South London, but are considering the means of infrastructure and sustainability. The project continues to grow as learners delve deeper and explore the range of methods required to build a tunnel or bridge,’ Aminul, English teacher.
