Launching year 13s Non-Assessment Programming Project

In preparation for the year 13 computing learners’ NEA, Zack Akil from Google virtually visited to deliver a masterclass on analysis of problems, developing ideas and coding advice. Having completed his undergraduate his degree in computing before going on to use these skills as a Machine Learning Engineer and Developer Advocate, Zack was a perfect fit to introduce the project.  

The NEA is a 30-hour project where learners will be expected to analyse, design, develop, test, evaluate and document a program written in a suitable programming language. Throughout the project, learners will be feeding back their progress to mentors from investment management and financial services company Morgan Stanely. This direct interaction with experienced employers will allow learners to better understand the importance of the project and how the skills they are learning link to industry.

Throughout this 30-hour project Learners will be assessed on the following outcomes: 
2.1 Elements of computational thinking 
2.2 Problem solving and programming 
2.3 Algorithms 
3.1. Analysis of the problem  
3.2 Design of the solution  
3.3 Developing the solution  
3.4 Evaluation  

 

During the first hour of the project, Zack shared valuable advice about forming and developing ideas. Despite being a virtual visit, the learners really took to Zack’s charismatic talk as he taught through personal anecdote, engaging Q&A and clear actionable advice. With a solid foundation already set, we are excited to follow the learners all the way to the conclusion of this project where we are sure we will be celebrating many original ideas and successful presentations.
