Our year 9 maths learners were joined by Safia and Charlotte from Runway Training for an engaging masterclass exploring the importance of Maths in interior design.
Interior design can be defined as the way a room looks like with all the things in it. It is not just about being creative with colours, textures etc, it is also about space management.
The class enjoyed discussions with their visitors about how they would change their classroom if they were interior designers. Through this discussion, Safia was able to explain some of the reasons for aspects of the classroom and why interior designers made these choices. They also looked at the work of prestigious UK interior designers Nicky Haslam and Kelly Hoppen and discussed which designs they preferred.
After an exciting introduction into the industry of interior design, the group explored the fundamental maths principles that designers use including scale and proportion, measurements and calculations and billing and invoice.
The class then had to use these maths principles to complete their floor plan. They were tasked to design their dream home whilst making sure to use the space effectively. Learners enjoyed this task as they used their maths skills and creativity to design the floor plan of their dream home.
Guy shared that, ‘At first, I found the task quite challenging but Safia came over and we discussed my ideas. I enjoyed it very much; it was really fun designing a floor plan.’
We have had the privilege of working with Runway Training on several occasions this term. Each session has been both enjoyable and beneficial to our learners. Thanks to Runway Training for their continued support of the college.
