Multi award-winning architect Jamie joined our learners for a masterclass on his inspiring professional journey in the Built Environment industry.
Jamie Fobert Architects, founded in 1996, is renowned for innovative architectural design. With a diverse clientele, ranging from individual homeowners to major cultural organizations and international retailers, the firm consistently transforms client aspirations and site intricacies into tactile architecture. For his outstanding achievement in Architecture, Jamie was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE), in the Queen's biannual honours programme.
Our learners were given the incredible insights into the Architecture and Construction industry and the stories behind the recently major redevelopment of the National Portrait Gallery where Jamie was the lead architect. When talking about this redevelopment, Jamie discussed topics from Unit 2 Construction Design – discussing design and construction process as well as sustainable methods and techniques used in the reconstruction of the National Portrait Gallery to preserve its historical context. He also explored factors that influence the design process like its strict planning consent as a Listed building and how different professions in construction comes together to work on a project of such enormity.
One lucky group of learners presented their very first Architecture Crit where they were given valuable critiques on their project as well advice on how to excel in the industry: ‘In order to stand out in the competitive world of Architecture, you have to stop looking at what others are doing and focus everything into building your own, original body of work’ advised Jamie.
Crit short for Critique is when Architecture learners display their drawings, present their solutions and defend them in front of tutors, visiting critics (jurors) and classmates. Feedback is instant and public. |
Reflecting on the session learner Celestine shared, ‘Jamie’s story from starting as an arhcitecture student in Canada to being a World Class Architect is so inspiring and a testament that dreams do come true, and my aspiration to be an architect one day can too.’
