At London Design & Engineering UTC, professional insight and real-world experience are embedded across our curriculum, ensuring that learners on all pathways benefit from exposure to future careers.
As part of the A Level Biology curriculum, our Year 12 learners recently took part in a session delivered by Manal Dahir, a fifth-year medical student at University College London and a member of FirstGenDoctors. The session combined subject knowledge with insight into medical careers, helping learners understand the application process, timelines and decisions involved in pursuing medicine.
Learners explored complex concepts through a cardiology masterclass, followed by a series of clinical case studies that required them to apply biological knowledge to real medical scenarios. The interactive format encouraged discussion, critical thinking and problem-solving, supporting both academic depth and practical understanding.
We chose to work with FirstGenDoctors, an organisation committed to widening participation in medicine and supporting young people from underrepresented backgrounds to access healthcare careers, because its focus on equity, aspiration and informed choice closely aligns with our approach at LDE UTC. This connection supports our commitment to ensuring learners can see and understand pathways into professions that have historically felt out of reach.
If you work in healthcare, higher education or a related profession and would like to support learners through curriculum-linked talks or masterclasses, we would welcome the opportunity to connect.
