ELFI Learners Recognised by The Furniture Makers’ Company for Outstanding Achievement in T Level Furniture Making

Fifteen learners from the East London Furniture Institute (ELFI) have been awarded a special prize by The Furniture Makers’ Company in recognition of their achievement, dedication and craftsmanship as the inaugural cohort of learners nationally to complete the T Level Technical Qualification in Craft and Design, Furniture Making.

The ceremony took place on 7 May 2026 at Furniture Makers’ Hall in London and was organised by Dr Tony Smart MBE, Past Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, alongside members of the Company who have supported the development of the qualification over several years.

The recognition marks an important milestone not only for the learners themselves, but also for technical craft education more widely. ELFI’s T Level programme combines technical knowledge with hands-on furniture-making skills, helping prepare the next generation of craftspeople for careers within the furniture, interiors and wider furnishings industry.

During the ceremony, Debbie Johnson, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, commended the learners before presenting each student with a personalised copy of Design of the 20th Century by Charlotte and Peter Fiell.

Reflecting on the milestone, Geoffrey Fowler, Chief Executive Officer of the East London Furniture Institute, said:

“This has been 12 years in the making, so it is wonderful to see our first cohort graduate and receive recognition from The Furniture Makers’ Company. The quality of the students’ work is already at a professional level, and these young people are ready and willing to enter the world of furniture making.”
The achievement reflects growing momentum behind technical pathways within the craft and furniture sector, particularly at a time when many heritage and specialist skills industries are focused on attracting and developing the next generation of makers.

ELFI’s approach combines industry-standard workshop practice with employer engagement and professional expectations, ensuring learners leave with both technical capability and an understanding of the wider creative industries they are entering.

We are delighted to see our learners recognised by such a respected organisation within the furniture industry and look forward to seeing where their careers take them next.
