Our new Year 9 students took part in their first Learning for Life session at LDE UTC, designed to get them thinking about the year ahead, the choices they make and the type of student they aspire to become.

As the youngest year group at LDE UTC, Year 9 marks the beginning of their journey with us and an opportunity to establish positive habits from the start.

What type of student are you?
Students began by discussing how they would describe themselves at school and what qualities they would like to develop throughout Year 9.

For many students, the new academic year represents an opportunity for a fresh start. During discussions, students shared different qualities they felt were important, with one describing themselves as a “reliable person”.

The activity encouraged students to think beyond academic results and consider how their attitude, behaviour and everyday choices contribute to their experience at school.

How are you going to spend your time?
Students were also encouraged to think about how they use their time outside of lessons.

The session explored finding a healthy balance between studying, sleep, gaming, using their phones and spending time on other activities. Students considered how managing their time effectively can help them stay focused while still enjoying their free time.

Understanding progress and attitude to learning
Year 9 were introduced to the information they will see on their school reports, including their target grades, progress grades and attitude to learning (ATL).

Students learnt that success at school is not only measured by exam results. Their attitude towards learning, effort, behaviour and willingness to engage are also an important part of their development.

The session also reinforced the school’s expectations and values, helping students understand how their behaviour and approach to learning will be assessed throughout the year.

The session provided a positive start to Year 9’s journey at LDE UTC, giving students an opportunity to reflect on their goals and consider how the decisions they make now can help shape the year ahead.
