National Grid Immersion Day Brings STEM Learning to Life at LDE UTC

Our learners recently took part in a National Grid Immersion Day, delivering employer-led learning that connected classroom teaching with real-world engineering and infrastructure.

Janice Tricks, Careers and Employer Engagement Lead at LDE UTC, explained how the day was developed collaboratively with National Grid and their volunteers:

We worked with National Grid to build an immersion day, planning and developing projects to support Maths, Science and Engineering learning alongside their volunteers. The activities enabled learners across Key Stages 3 and 4 to take part in engaging, professionally delivered sessions that used real-life scenarios to embed learning. Following the success of the day, the immersion experience will be repeated annually to support young people in making informed decisions about their future pathways and career choices. Our grateful thanks go to everyone who supported such an exciting day.

Throughout the immersion day, learners took part in hands-on activities and practical challenges linked directly to National Grid’s work, helping them understand how classroom learning is applied in real engineering and infrastructure contexts.

National Grid graduate volunteer Georgina Oliver described the experience as a “brilliant day”, highlighting learners’ enthusiasm and curiosity, and pointing to the design challenge as “a fantastic hands-on way” to explore how the network operates.

Johnny Harrington, also a National Grid graduate volunteer, described the day as “really rewarding”, noting how interested and keen to participate the learners were across the sessions.

Fergus Hynd, Head of Social Mobility at National Grid UK, said:

“This was about bringing the curriculum to life. By teaching Maths, Physics and Engineering through real National Grid challenges, students could see how what they learn in the classroom connects directly to real careers and real infrastructure. The immersion day shows what’s possible when schools and employers work as true partners – supporting teachers, inspiring students and opening eyes to careers they might not otherwise see.”

Forward-thinking businesses looking to build future talent pipelines and shape the next generation of industry professionals are invited to get in touch.
